Expectations During Dustless Refinishing

Dustless Refinishing - Restoring the natural beauty of hardwood floors traditionally involves sanding—a process notorious for generating substantial dust, leading to extensive cleanup and potential health concerns. However, advancements in flooring technology have introduced dustless hardwood floor refinishing, offering homeowners a cleaner, healthier, and more efficient alternative.

Understanding Dustless Hardwood Floor Refinishing

Dustless refinishing utilizes specialized equipment designed to capture nearly all dust particles produced during the sanding process. These systems are equipped with powerful vacuums that connect directly to sanding machines, ensuring that dust is efficiently collected as it's generated. This method not only minimizes airborne dust but also significantly reduces the time required for post-project cleanup.

Benefits of Dustless Refinishing

Enhanced Air Quality:

By capturing dust at the source, dustless refinishing prevents the spread of fine particles throughout your home, leading to improved indoor air quality—a crucial factor for households with allergies or respiratory sensitivities.

Healthier Environment:

Minimizing airborne dust reduces the risk of respiratory issues and allergic reactions, ensuring a safer environment for both occupants and workers.

Reduced Cleanup Time:

Traditional sanding often leaves a fine layer of dust on surfaces, necessitating extensive cleaning. Theoretically speaking, Dust Containment Systems capture up to 99.8% of dust, significantly cutting down the time and effort required for cleanup.

Superior Finish Quality:

With minimal dust settling on freshly applied finishes, the result is a smoother and more flawless appearance, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your floors.

Time Efficiency:

The reduction in dust and cleanup allows for a more streamlined refinishing process, enabling homeowners to resume normal activities sooner.

Dustless Refinishing, Barrie Project

In a recent project in Barrie, Ontario, Gerber Hardwood Flooring demonstrated the efficacy of dustless refinishing. The team tackled a floor covered with a thick, glued-down black carpet underlay. Despite the initial daunting appearance, the dustless sanding process revealed pristine white oak beneath the residue. The client was astounded by the transformation, showcasing the potential of dustless refinishing to restore even the most neglected floors.

This project started with a thick layer of glued down, black carpet under-pad. You may not know it now, but YES, there is hardwood under this black stuff.  First sanding run, just wait to see the beautiful, real wood underneath that mess.

Sometimes, a job like this may overwhelm a homeowner and they may feel that it's not possible to clean up after the removal of the carpet like it was in this case.

This is what happened here.

The Client really had a tough time believing that his wood floors are salvageable.  Imagine their surprise right after the first few boards were sanded.

Each run with the heavy drum sander revealed the fresh new wood below the black, sticky, spongy residue leftover after carper was removed.

Isn't that incredible?  Just look at this clean White Oak!

Next it's time to start the edger work.  The black residue needed to be removed around the room, for a clean finish.

Once that was done, the floor was ready for the second run with the drum sander.

Next, once the floor is conditioned, the stain can be applied.

This Client chose a nice, warm brown with red undertones as it worked with their existing furnishings.

It is important to consider other elements in your home before you make the decision regarding the color and the finishes of major surfaces (like your hardwood floors).

Few coats of water based varnish are applied.

Our Clients always have a choice between the Polyurethane finish and the Waterborne finishes.  Usually we apply 3 coats of oil-based varnish or 4 coats of water-based finish.

Both are very durable, but we let the Clients decide which one is best for them, based on their lifestyle, and personal preferences.

When those dry, we will be able to install the quarter-round trim.

Looks like new!  Doesn't it?
