Stairs Painted White
Sometimes all you need is a fresh coat of paint and a new shade of stain and your entire space looks like from a spread in the interior decorating magazine.
This was a beautiful staircase to start with, but the owners wanted to update and to freshen up the look.
Here, the house was about 8 years old and the stairs were still in an excellent shape. But because the natural Oak "look" is starting to look a bit dated, the owners decided that maybe it was time for something new.
We started with a natural finish on a Red Oak stairs and railing.
Here you see the stairs with the dismantled railing and pickets.
In the pictures below, the steps are already stained, but the actual "before" looks just like many other plain staircases with the natural golden look of the unstained Red Oak.
The staircase was dismantled as this makes it easier to access all the areas of the staircase for sanding and hand scraping and to make it easier to paint or stain the spindles, railing and posts.
You can see that the sides of the stairs and the risers are sanded with a hand held sander, before the primer is applied.
This is a crucial step, without it the paint would not adhere properly and even the slightest scratches would be visible in no time at all.
We use the professional stains and finished for top quality finish and durability. Stain is applied to each step. Then it has to dry before we can apply the finishing.
Here, we have the hand rail installed (for safety, as the owners were living in the house during this renovation).
My favorite part... the paint goes on the raisers and sides. Looks so crisp already.
Here is another view:
Next step, the pickets (already painted) are being installed.
WOW! Don't you love it?
The beautiful grain of the steps, contrasting with the crisp white of the pickets, framed by the matching handrail.
And a bonus view, still before the final dusting and clean up.
One flight of stairs will take on average about a week to complete.
